Ahead of an upcoming meeting at The Tite Group, Creative Director Jamie King asked interviewing Art Director Brendan Watson to bring along samples which illustrated his thought process. Always being one to go above and beyond, Brendan took this as an opportunity to create a brand new portfolio piece. It shouldn’t be a typical print ad, Brendan concluded, since The Tite Group isn’t a typical agency. So with that, Brendan decided on creating an infographic, since it was something he had already been hungry to create.
Infographics need info and Facebook posts offer a treasure trove of data if you look hard enough. A recent post questioning people’s mac & cheese utensil preference had garnered above average results, so Brendan settled on that as his data source. With that Brendan set out to create an infographic which visualized the great mac & cheese debate: fork vs spoon.
Brendan organized the data, analyzed it, and decided the infographic should centre on the results of the big question, but also be supported by a break down of respondents and then finished up with some fun anecdotal responses and quotes. After gathering reference material, Brendan sketched out some preliminary elements and layouts. He then digitally illustrated individual elements, and then went to layout.
It would be a two-stage launch. Brendan first shared the infographic privately with Jamie, and then took it public on Facebook.
On Tuesday, May 17 ‘The Great Debate’ infographic was shared in a closed door meeting at The Tite Group. Jamie was both surprised and impressed with not only the final product, but Brendan’s thoughtful and analytical creative process.
